I was given the prompt of Mana organizing a play and making everyone participate and this somehow turned into playing a little bit of dress up with the characters. (Yes, that is an interpretation of a 'younger' Cross in a dress. And yes, it was fun to design!)

Unfortunately for my followers, I’m not actually done talking about Gargoyles today ^^; I’ve had this post in my drafts for several months, and reading Quest has finally pushed it out into the wild. I cannot stop thinking about a character dynamic that I’d previously never given any thought to, but now I wish had been established sometime during the SLG run. Long story short, I think it has the potential to be fairly interesting: some sort of friendship/camaraderie between Angela and Macbeth.

I can easily believe that Angela would be interested in reaching out to him once she formally joins the Manhattan Clan and learns that he keeps a residence in New York, in the interest of understanding her mother better. Macbeth is not going to be impartial about Demona, but he does bring a unique perspective about her and her history that the rest of the clan simply does not possess, and could help Angela fill in the gaps of who Demona was and who she continues to be. Even if it’s painful to hear, I think Angela would both seek out and appreciate this extra information, and it would help her work through her own feelings, post-Reckoning and post-Hunter’s Moon. I genuinely think she and Macbeth would have a lot to talk about!

Such a relationship could also have additional benefits, both from a storytelling and character-development perspective:

1). It gives Macbeth someone to talk to, a confidante, which would be good for his overall mental state (particularly now that Banquo and Fleance are not in his employ);

2). It lends itself to additional fence-mending between him and the Manhattan Clan, allowing him to continue the transition from one-time enemy to occasional ally. And maybe it leads to some additional closure for Broadway after "Lighthouse?” Being on decent terms with Macbeth probably means access to his library :D

3). If he’s genuinely the clan's ally and not actively suicidal anymore, it presents a path for the Manhattan Clan to use him as a resource in situations where it would be a good idea to keep an eye on Demona—and hey, if there’s a random chance he might show up any time the clan is tangling with her, it’s almost always going to be good for them and bad for her, right?? At the very least he can serve as the canary in a potential coal mine situation—and as a bonus, he might get to annoy her a bit, which is always fun.

Now, this most certainly would not have worked for Demona’s scheme in Quest, but certainly there are other situations where his presence would not only be appropriate, but appreciated (speaking of Quest... I’ll bet he could have helped the Manhattan Clan with magic item research/narrowing down candidates for the Three New Keys, like. A TON. You don’t even have to tell him why you’re doing this research… though I also would have liked to see him try to get a hand on the Spear of Gungnir. Y'know, just to see what he does with it :))) But really, just hire him as extra Demona insurance every once in a while, is what I’m saying.

It would be an interesting (I think!) role for the man to play and give him something to do in the narrative going forward, as well as potentially providing some additional character development for Angela: initially reaching out because she is a very compassionate individual with a desire to connect to others, and who has a fairly different upbringing/perspective compared to the rest of her clan… but maybe she experiences some additional inner turmoil as a result of coming to understand her mother better, and/or acknowledging that she’s using Macbeth in a way that could be seen as a bit manipulative (her mother would be quick to comment on this as soon as she knew, regardless of whether or not it’s true).

I just think it would be neat, is all. The fanfic-writing braincells are churning mightily on this one.

Finally got around to talking to and dating the Hex. After doing the quest, I forgot about them, sorry, Hex. Truly, dating sims are hard and scary. Adventure game-type choices are fun and easy, it's just story stuff, but when it comes to interacting with fictional people for the purpose of being liked... It's so scary. It's not nearly this scary in real life. And being into bishoujo games doesn't make it better, because they're not dating sims at all, but adventure games in most cases. At least the choices aren't timed! When we were playing Sakura Taisen with a guy from class, we got super scared every time there was a timed choice, so the heroines looked at us weird all the time. I also wish you could build affection in more ways other than talking and doing bounties once a refresh. But it wouldn't fit the game, probably, Warframe isn't an SLG

Some scattered thoughts on the 2023 HM movie

Maybe I'll do something more in depth later after the wide release and when I'm not so exhausted

But for now, here's some notes. There are a couple of minor spoilers, so I'll still put this under a read more. Be warned.

I really enjoyed the Easter eggs. I'm looking forward to getting the blu ray and pausing it every five seconds to see what I spy in the background.

Our mortal crew is very likable. Ben is definitely the stand out character for me. His arc is lovely and sympathetic and he almost made me cry.

I liked how the film approaches grief and loss and love. It felt sincere. And it was handled in a way that I think most kids would get, too. If anything, it may help open up conversations for some of the younger audience.

Lots of character cameos, and multiple new ghosts created just for the film. Really appreciated the new spirits. They fit right in. The extras and supporting cast playing these quirky ghosts were great. ... Pay them. Pay them what they're worth. You couldn't have this massive menagerie of the macabre without them

I've seen a lot of reviews say the jokes can fall flat. Most of them hit for me. "It'll cost you... three dollars," still made me giggle.

Hatty... I'm so glad Disney finally made a proper outright villain again. Not a twist villain. Just a straight up murderous, power hungry, manipulative, absolute asshole. It's been way too long. Pay your writers, and pay them well so we can get more of this.

The way the Mansion would change and rearrange itself was great. I love that the house is a character all on its own. It has a backstory. It's its own entity in a way. Love that. Properly pay your animators and special effects team, because their work is the only way that kind of thing is accomplished so well.

William Gracey is a total sweetheart and I love him. His backstory is actually super similar to Edward's, so that might bug some people. But he's different enough in his demeanor, I think, that maybe it won't be really obvious if you're not thinking that hard about it. But, yeah, there are a couple of things that feel repeated from the 2003 movie. I don't know how much of that to chalk up to tropes, or if it was some intentional reworking. This isn't a remake, it's still its own thing, but it's easy to see some inspiration from the previous film.

Loved Connie. No thoughts in that head except "WHACKITY-WHACK!" She's chaotically vicious for the sake of it, and that's fun. My perfect Constance is Debbie from Adam's Family Values. Or a slightly sympathetic schemer, for a more grounded route. But I'll take maniacal seriel killer Connie, too. One moment with her actually got the biggest laugh from me.

Thinking about it, it also borrowed plot elements from the 2003 video game, too. But did those elements better. For the most part.

That's all that's coming to mind right now. Might talk more about it later. I had a good time. I do recommend it. Are there things I'd do differently? Well, yeah. I still want something where the ghosts are the focus. But I guess I'll just provide that myself. And the IDW and SLG comics also give us that.

I look forward to discussing it more with the fandom once the film has been out a while longer. I think there'll be a lot of different opinions on it.

Iron Meat Releases Today, Physical Available at Strictly Limited

Retroware's latest release, Iron Meat, hits just about every platform under the sun today. It's a run-and-gun action game, and it's not particularly shy about its sources of inspiration. Early word has been pretty positive, and I've gotten to play around with it for a day or two and find it to be a rather good time. I wouldn't call it better than Contra by any means, but it scratches the itch better than anything since Blazing Chrome. $19.99 digitally, if that's what you're into.

If you want to pick it up physically, it's being handled by Strictly Limited Games. The waning of the boutique physical market seems to have hit SLG as badly as everyone else in that end of the business, so I'd normally be a bit cautious about directing people toward them at the moment. Iron Meat, however, isn't a pre-order for some distant ship date that even Nostradamus couldn't predict. The copies are in hand and ready to ship. At the time I'm writing this, it seems like stock on the Switch version is low but the PlayStation 5 version still has plenty left.

I'll probably be doing a review of this game once I get a little more time with it. After how roughly Contra: Operation Galuga ran on Switch earlier this year, it's nice to have a game like this that doesn't have severe tech issues.

I have this strong belief that he's incredible with math and statistics due to his interest in sports.

There's so much math that goes into figuring out the stats of baseball players; things like pitches (angles and miles per hour), batting averages, on-base percentages, and slugging percentages. All, by the way if you look at the MLB Player Hitting Stat Leaders (a great cheat sheet if you're ever confused on all the numbers you may see on the screen when watching the games), require certain formulas to configure the rates/percentages.

For example, the slugging percentage (SLG) formula is:

(1B+2Bx2+3Bx3+HRx4)/AB

Which basically translates to:

(Hits+Doubles(multiplied by 2)+Triples(multiplied by 3)+Home Runs(multiplied by 4)) and then divided by At-Bats.

So, if during the baseball season a player has 175 hits (or where they hit the ball on a fair-play and make it as far as first base), 30 doubles (where the player hits the ball and can successfully make it to second base), 3 triples (where the player hits the ball and makes it to third base), 50 home runs (the player hits the ball out of the playing field either to the seats or even outside of the park), and is on home base to bat around 500 times—then the formula would be:

(175+30(2)+3(3)+50(4))/500

If following PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction) correctly:

(175+60+9+200)/500

(444)/500

The slugging percentage for anonymous player would then be:

.888 (and stops at the hundredths place, or the number value three spaces to the right of the decimal point)

The number should usually be less than the whole number one, meaning that the slugging percentage should be a decimal value less than one. If you somehow got a value bigger than 0.—, then the calculation is wrong.

As, for example, Aaron Judge's (of the New York Yankees who lead the player hitting stats this year) slugging percentage (or SLG) is 0.708.

Anyway, enough of me getting all math brained. (I like math too much). (And also baseball lmao).

In order to figure out some of these rates and percentages, you'd have to have a rudimentary understanding of algebraic equations. And, also, you'd have to be precise and accurate when calculating. Now, Steve may not be the one at his varsity games (or whatever level he was when playing baseball) doing the calculations on the coach's clipboard, he'd probably still be curious or interested in some of his favorite players' stats.

But, who knows, maybe he did run the books every once in a while when playing. Maybe he volunteered some of his time to be assistant coach for softball teams or even the elementary school minor leagues. Anyway. I truly, honestly believe he'd be competent in math, at least to an Algebra 1 or 2 level. And, y'know, he'd probably deny being totally into math, but I think he's one of the top tier students in those classes. After all, in order to stay on all these sports teams (to my understanding he was on one of the basketball teams, a junior varsity or varsity level baseball team, and co-captain of the swim team) you have to have at least a C grade or higher—otherwise, you're booted from the team. I think he liked sports enough that he actually tried in school; especially considering several history references and sports analyses he makes in the show.

Sorry to ramble, but I fully agree OP.

Give me good at math Steve. Maybe he’s dyslexic and words never made sense and always swam away from him, but numbers? He can memorize formulas, he can recognize pattterns.

I feel like it would add so much dimension to his character. I always like it in fic when they write Steve knowing a second language, or playing an instrument because I feel like the fandom has taken this idea that Steve is incompetent and ran with it. He’s incredibly clever, and sarcastic (a sign of intelligence btw), and snarky. He thinks quickly, is it well thought out? Not always, but that’s just his lack of self preservation skills. People can be smart and idiots at the same time, they can have their strengths and I wish that was portrayed more in fic and fandom.

So let him be good at math. Let him just be able to make sense of it. Show him tutoring El and assisting Lucas and Max when Mike and Dustin seem too condescending or intimidating or bitchy.

He’ll be bitchy too, but in an understanding way, because he knows what it’s like to struggle with something others find simple.

Also give us a scene where Mike or Dustin find out and flip their lids PLEASE
